Shipley and the Sussex Weald

Three pubs you can walk to, and the Downs twenty minutes the other way

The farm sits between Southwater and Shipley village on the B2224, five miles south of Horsham. Footpaths run off it in several directions, and the good stuff starts within a mile.

Opening times and booking arrangements change. It is always worth checking with a place directly before you set out.

On foot from the pitch

Walk out of the gate and keep going

Public footpaths and bridleways cross the farm, so you do not need to drive anywhere to start a walk.

Walking the farm, and the stock to watch out for

  • The George and Dragon Walking distance

    One of three pubs you can reach on foot from the farm.

  • The Selsey Arms Walking distance

    Also within walking distance.

  • The Countryman Walking distance

    The third of the three. A footpath through the farm leads to a nearby pub serving local ales.

  • Fishing lakes Nearby

    There is fishing close by. Ask at the farm shop, where local information is kept.

Days out

Knepp is up the road, and it belongs to our landlord

Of everything within reach of the farm, the rewilding estate at West Grinstead is the one worth planning a day around.

  • Knepp Wildland West Grinstead

    The Burrell family's estate, and the best known rewilding project in Britain. Free-roaming longhorn cattle, Tamworth pigs and deer have been turning former arable back into scrub and wood pasture for two decades, and the white storks nesting there are the first to breed in England in centuries. Access is managed, so check what is open and what needs booking before you go.

  • Shipley Windmill Shipley

    The village smock mill, and the landmark on this stretch of the Weald.

  • National Trust properties and gardens Around the county

    The farm is centrally placed for a good number of them in Sussex and just over the Surrey border.

  • The South Downs National Park About 20 minutes

    The chalk escarpment and the long ridge walks along the top of it, straight down the road from here.

  • The Sussex coast About 20 minutes

    Close enough that a beach afternoon does not need to be an expedition.

Practicalities

Shops, trains and the airport

Southwater, a mile and a half away, has the nearest shops, and there are a couple of shops, a post office and some takeaways in the area around the farm.

Horsham is five miles north, and has a good train service to London and to Gatwick. Buses run into Horsham from Southwater, and taxis will come out from the town. Gatwick Airport itself is about thirty minutes by car, which makes this a quieter place to leave a van than anywhere closer to the terminal.

On site, the farm shop sells our own eggs and honey along with homemade marmalade and cakes, and keeps information about local events and places to visit. Full campsite details are here, and directions from the A24 are on the contact page.
